| Description: | Amoxycillin, Ampicillin and Penicillin are a group of antibiotics collectively referred to as beta lactams. They are widely used to treat bacterial infections in both humans and animals and in the past have been administered to animal feed for growth promotion and collective prophylactic treatment. It is therefore important to monitor beta lactam residues in edible tissues and milk because of the hypersensitivity of some individuals to these antibiotics and the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. For this reason, maximum residue limits have been specified for food products and milk to try and control the levels of these antibiotics and prevent them from reaching the consumer. |
